Secretary-General Appoints Maged Abdelaziz of Egypt Special Adviser on Africa

 

The Secretary-General has selected Maged Abdelaziz of Egypt as his Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA).  Mr. Abdelaziz has been serving as the Permanent Representative of Egypt to the United Nations in New York since 2005.  He will bring to the position more than 33 years of experience in the multilateral diplomacy and direct engagement in promoting global development and socio-economic agenda, including as the Co-chair of the Financing for Development Review Conference in 2008 and the Rapporteur representing Africa at the Conference on the Economic and Financial Crisis and Its Impact on Development in 2009.  He is now representing Africa in the United Nations Economic and Social Council as its vice President and in the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, also known as Rio+20, Conference bureau.  He will focus on revitalizing the agenda of the special needs of Africa, including through the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), on which the Secretary-General attaches highest priority.
