Homi Kharas of Pakistan Appointed to Lead Secretary-General’s

High-Level Panel on Post-2015 Development Agenda

 

Homi Kharas, a national of Pakistan was appointed today as Lead Author and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Secretary-General’s High-level Panel on the global development agenda beyond 2015, which is co-chaired by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and Prime Minister David Cameron of the United Kingdom.

He will be responsible for articulating the views of the High-Level Panel in a report which is scheduled to be submitted to the Secretary-General by 31 May 2013.  The Panel is tasked with providing “recommendations on a global post-2015 agenda with shared responsibilities for all countries and with the fight against poverty and sustainable development at its core”.  The Panel will hold its first meeting on 25 September, on the margins of the annual high-level debate of the United Nations General Assembly.

Mr. Kharas is currently a Senior Fellow and Deputy Director in the Global Economy and Development Programme of the Brookings Institution, an independent think tank in Washington, D.C.  In that capacity, he has studied policies and trends influencing the developing world, including aid to poor countries, the emergence of the middle class, and global governance and the Group of 20 (G-20).  He previously worked for 26 years at the World Bank, including as Chief Economist for the East Asia and Pacific region.

He holds a PhD in economics from Harvard University.
