Secretary-General Disappointed by Israel’s Decision on New Settlement Construction
in West Bank, Reiterates Settlement Activity Contravenes International Law
The following statement was issued on 6 August by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
The Secretary-General is deeply disappointed by the recent approval by the Government of Israel to build more than 900 housing units in East Jerusalem. He reiterates that settlement activity in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is contrary to international law, and he is concerned by provocative actions on the ground. The Secretary-General supports ongoing efforts to find a way to resume peace talks, and underlines that creating an environment that is conducive to progress is vital.
