Secretary-General Welcomes Conduct of Second Round
of Presidential Elections in Niger
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
The Secretary-General takes note of the provisional results of the second round of the presidential election in Niger as announced by the NationalIndependent Electoral Commission on 14 March. The Secretary-General welcomes the peaceful and credible conduct of the poll, which constitutes an important step towards restoring democratic governance to the country. He commends voters for participating actively in the election, as well as all those who worked tirelessly for a peaceful transition in Niger,including the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy. The United Nations will continue to assist the people of Niger and the future leadership in addressing post-transition challenges.
