Secretary-General Welcomes Voluntary Departure of Gabonese Group
from United Nations Development Programme Compound
The following statement was issued on 27 February by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
The Secretary-General welcomes the peaceful resolution of the situation regarding a group of Gabonese that had been in the UNDP [United Nations Development Programme] compound in Libreville since 25 January. The Secretary-General commends President Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon, for his positive cooperation with the United Nations, which facilitated the peaceful and voluntary departure, on 27 February of the group from the UNDP compound.
The Secretary-General welcomes the willingness of Gabonese, irrespective of background or political affiliation, to work together to ensure that differences are resolved peacefully in order to preserve the peace and stability for which their country is known.
The Secretary-General reaffirms his readiness to continue working with the Government and the people of Gabon to help bring peace, stability and prosperity to the Central Africa subregion, particularly as the United Nations sets up the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa in the Gabonese capital, Libreville.
