Secretary-General Welcomes Ratification by Russian Duma of New Treaty
on Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
The Secretary-General welcomes the adoption of the law on ratification of the new START [Treaty on the Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms] by the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, thereby allowing for the Treaty to enter into force. In fulfilling one of the actions agreed upon at the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the Russian Federation demonstrates its commitment to achieving nuclear disarmament and ensuring non-proliferation.
The Secretary-General hopes that the Russian Federation and the United States build upon this momentum and engage in follow-on efforts in order to achieve deeper reductions in all types of nuclear weapons.
