Secretary-General Commends People of Comoros on Peaceful Elections, Reiterates

 

United Nations Commitment to Support Comorians’ Consolidation of Democracy

 


The following statement was issued on 18 January by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:


Following the proclamation on 13 January of the final results of the presidential and gubernatorial elections in the Comoros, the Secretary-General commends the people of the Comoros for the peaceful atmosphere in which these elections were held.  He welcomes the acceptance of the final results by all candidates to the presidential elections.


The Secretary-General commends the important role played by the African Union in encouraging the holding of peaceful and democratic elections in the Comoros.  He notes the joint statement of 29 December 2010 issued by international observers from the African Union, the League of Arab States, the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie and the Organization of the Islamic Conference, which indicates that the elections were generally free and fair.


The Secretary-General reiterates the United Nations commitment to support the efforts of the Comorian people in the consolidation of national unity and democracy, as well as the promotion of socio-economic development.
