Secretary-General Appoints György Busztin of Hungary
as Deputy Special Representative for Iraq
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed György Busztin of Hungary as his Deputy Special Representative for Iraq.
Mr. Busztin, who will head the political, electoral and constitutional support component of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), replaces Jerzy Skuratowicz of Poland, who has served in Iraq for the past two years. The Secretary-General is grateful to Mr. Skuratowicz for his dedicated service and commitment to assisting the people of Iraq.
Bringing a wealth of diplomatic experience to the position, Mr. Busztin recently returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Budapest after serving as Hungary’s Ambassador to Iran, and was previously Ambassador to Indonesia. He has also served in various capacities in Afghanistan, subsequent to his service in Libya and Egypt.
Mr. Busztin earned a degree in Arabic History from Damascus University in Syria, and a PhD in Arabic language and Semitic philology from Lorand Eotvos University in Budapest. In addition to his native Hungarian, he speaks English, French, Arabic, Farsi/Dari (Persian), Malay (Indonesian), and Russian.
Born in 1955, he is married and has two sons.
