Secretary-General, in Message for Global Compact Summit, Says Event Can Project
Vision for Corporate Leadership Needed to Defeat Poverty, Protect Planet
Following is UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s video message for the Global Compact Leaders Summit 2010 website today, 18 December:
Friends, in June 2010, the United Nations will host the third Global Compact Leaders Summit in New York. Many chief executive officers will be there. So will Government officials and civil society.
Our aim is to highlight the key role of responsible business in building markets that are more sustainable and inclusive. This is an urgent task. We face market breakdowns, environmental degradation, hunger, climate change and many other crises.
The stakes are high. The Summit can help. It will be a platform for collaboration. It can project a vision of the kind of corporate leadership we need to defeat poverty, protect the planet and achieve other vital goals.
I am convinced that we can drive this agenda forward. Let us make the Summit a success. Let us, together, do our part to deliver a more peaceful and sustainable future.
