Ten Draft Resolutions on Sustainable Development among 14 Submitted
for Consideration, Action by Second Committee
A total of 14 draft resolutions were introduced in the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) this afternoon on agenda items ranging from sustainable development to macroeconomic policy questions to globalization and interdependence.
The Sudan’s representative, speaking on behalf of the “Group of 77” developing countries and China, introduced 10 of the drafts, including five sustainable development texts: implementation of Agenda 21, the Programme for the Further Implementation of Agenda 21 and the outcomes of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (document A/C.2/64/L.25); follow-up to and implementation of the Mauritius Strategy for the Further Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (document A/C.2/64/L.15); the Convention on Biological Diversity (document A/C.2/64/L.29); oil slick on Lebanese shores (document A/C.2/64/L.20); and agriculture development and food security (document A/C.2/64/L.27).
The representative of the Sudan also submitted, under the Committee’s agenda item on macroeconomic policy questions, a draft resolution on the international financial system and development (document A/C.2/64/L.19), which advocated the need for a global, collective and adequately financed response to the current economic crisis with a focus on restoring growth in developing countries.
Furthermore, the representative introduced a text titled “Towards a New International Economic Order” (document A/C.2/64/L.16), in addition to drafts on information and communication technologies for development (document A/C.2/64/L.26) and science and technology for development (document A/C.2/64/L.17). Also submitted was a text on groups of countries in special situations: specific actions related to the particular needs and problems of landlocked developing countries: outcome of the International Ministerial Conference of Landlocked and Transit Developing Countries and Donor Countries and International Financial and Development Institutions on Transit Transport Cooperation (document A/C.2/64/L.18).
Returning to sustainable development, Tajikistan’s representative introduced a text on the midterm comprehensive review of the implementation of the International Decade for Action, "Water for Life", 2005-2015 (document A/C.2/64/L.22), by which the General Assembly would decide to convene the review in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, in 2010. Switzerland’s representative submitted a draft resolution on sustainable mountain development (document A/C.2/64/L.23).
Under the Committee’s agenda item on follow-up to and implementation of the outcome of the 2002 International Conference on Financing for Development and the 2008 Review Conference, Mexico’s representative introduced a text on modalities for the fourth High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development (document A/C.2/64/L.28), scheduled for 23 and 24 November.
Israel’s representative introduced a draft resolution on agricultural technology for development (document A/C.2/64/L.21), noting the important role of agricultural technology in fostering development and economic growth.
The Committee will meet again on Thursday, 12 November, when more texts on sustainable development will be submitted and action taken on others.
