with headquarters panel on 8 july

The United Nations University-Office in New York, together with UNU-Institute for New Technologies, will hold a panel on 8 July 2004 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the United Nations Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium to mark the release of two books:

The publications are the culmination of two separate but related research projects.  The first employs a refreshing new framework to identify cases of technological dynamism across a range of countries and industries, ranging from the recent growth of the computer software industry in India to the aircraft industry in Brazil.

The second volume discusses a number of institutional support mechanisms for innovation in developing countries and assesses the specific role of venture capital institutions in stimulating technology-based small and medium enterprises.

Following the presentation and reactions from the discussants, there will be an interactive discussion session to further explore the implications of these findings for developing countries.  Speakers include:

-- Anthony Bartzokas, UNU-Institute for New Technologies;

-- Sunil Mani, UNU-Institute for New Technologies;

-- Lawrence Rausch, National Science Foundation; and

-- Charles Gardner, Director of Health Equity Programme, Rockefeller Foundation.
