NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF IRAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19980313 Biographical Note

Seyyed Mohammad Hadi Nejad-Hosseinian, the new Permanent Representative of Iran to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary- General Kofi Annan.

Mr. Nejad-Hosseinian has held a number of high-ranking government posts since the establishment of the Islamic Republic in 1979 and was a consultant in the private sector before the Islamic revolution.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Nejad-Hosseinian was Deputy Minister of Petroleum for International Affairs. From 1989 to 1994, he was Minister of Heavy Industry and Chairman of a joint economic committee with a number of countries. He held the post of Deputy Minister of Petroleum for Engineering and Projects from 1985 to 1989. In 1981, he was appointed Minister of Road and Transportation, a post he held for four years. From 1980 to 1981, he was Deputy at the Plan and Budget Organization.

Mr. Nejad-Hosseinian holds a Master of Science in Engineering from the University of Teheran. He had received a Master of Science and was working towards his Ph.D at George Washington University, Washington D.C., when he returned to Iran in the wake of the Islamic revolution in 1979.

Born in 1947, Mr. Nejad-Hosseinian is married and has four children.
