UNITED NATIONS SEEKS $100.5 MILLION FOR SOMALIA
19961216 NEW YORK, 16 December (Department of Humanitarian Affairs) -- The United Nations today appealed for $100.5 million to address humanitarian relief and rehabilitation needs in Somalia, a country plagued by the effects of six years of civil war.The United Nations Consolidated Inter-Agency Appeal for Somalia, covering the period from October 1996 through December 1997, is based upon extensive consultations among United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations. It contains two separate sections, one calling for $46.5 million for joint activities of the United Nations agencies and the other requesting $54 million for the individual requirements of the United Nations Development Fund (UNDP), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Organization of Migration (IOM).
The humanitarian situation in certain areas of Somalia remains precarious, while some progress has been achieved in other areas over the last two years. The Appeal is structured to reflect the differing environments and needs. The following priority sectors of intervention have been identified: emergency assistance; reintegration of internally displaced people, refugees and returnees; rehabilitation and governance.
To ensure a full picture of the programme requirements for the humanitarian community in Somalia, a special supplement is annexed to the appeal with the requirements of non-governmental organizations, as well as the provisional requirements for the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Donors are urged to provide generous support to the vulnerable population and to protect the vital gains that have been achieved through the combined efforts of United Nations agencies and their international and national humanitarian partners in Somalia in recent years.
