SECRETARY-GENERAL DESIGNATES ASSISTANT SECRETARY-GENERAL ROSARIO GREEN TO ASSIST HIM IN SYSTEM-WIDE FOLLOW-UP TO FOURTH WORLD CONFERENCE ON WOMEN

19951228 The Secretary-General is strongly committed to assuming "responsibility for coordination of policy within the United Nations for the implementation of the Platform for Action and for the mainstreaming of a system-wide gender perspective in all activities of the United Nations system", as requested in paragraph 30 of General Assembly resolution 50/203, in accordance with the Platform for Action which was adopted by the Fourth World Conference on Women: Action for Equality, Development and Peace. That Conference was held from 4 to 15 September in Beijing.

As he indicated in his report to the Assembly on the follow-up to the Conference (document A/50/744), the Secretary-General will ensure that the gender perspective is integrated into all aspects of the work of the Organization, and will work with his colleagues, the executive heads of the United Nations specialized agencies and the United Nations programmes and funds, to ensure a coordinated system-wide response, integrating the follow-up of this Conference with that of other global conferences.

In response to the Conference's recommendation that a senior official in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General should act as his "adviser on gender issues" and "help ensure system-wide implementation of the Platform for Action, in close cooperation with the Division for the Advancement of Women", the Secretary-General has designated his Senior Adviser, Assistant Secretary-General Rosario Green, to act in this capacity.

Ms. Green will assist the Secretary-General in ensuring that the gender perspective is effectively integrated into policies and programmes in all areas of the work of the system, and is fully taken into account in furthering the Organization's linkages with civil society. This overview and coordination role will be integrated into Ms. Green's political and other responsibilities in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General.

The Senior Adviser will draw upon the expertise and assistance of all existing entities working in this area, including the Division for the Advancement of Women of the Department of Policy Coordination and Sustainable Development, as well as the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women, the Focal Point on Women in the Department of Administration and Management, and other concerned units within United Nations departments, funds and programmes.

System-wide coordination aspects of these functions will be pursued through the interagency committee which the Secretary-General is recommending for establishment by the Administrative Committee on Coordination. * *** *
