SECRETARY-GENERAL MEETS WITH CANADIAN FOREIGN MINISTER, NGOS, ARAB AMBASSADORS ON THIRD DAY OF GHANA DAY VISIT

In the afternoon of 28 November 1995, the third day of his official visit to Ghana, the Secretary-General met at 3:30 p.m., for 45 minutes, with the Foreign Minister of Canada, Andre Ouellet. They had an exchange of views regarding problems faced by Africa and discussed in particular the assistance to be offered by the international community to Economic Community of West African States' Monitoring Observer Group (ECOMOG) to perform its peace duties.

At 5:45 p.m., the Secretary-General visited the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) office in Accra where he had a 30-minute discussion with the heads of bureaux of the United Nations agencies in Accra. Later on he addressed a meeting of all United Nations staff posted in Accra.

At 6:45 p.m., the Secretary-General had a one-hour meeting with representatives of the Ghana United Nations Association and other non- governmental organizations which are supportive of the United Nations. The Chairman of the meeting, Mike Awuah Asamoah, the Director of Africa of the World Federation of United Nations Associations, congratulated the Secretary-General and the United Nations following this year's fiftieth anniversary celebration of the United Nations which was widely commemorated all over the 10 regions of Ghana. Later, the Acting National President of the Ghana United Nations Students and Youth Association, Myra Togobo, pledged the support of the youth of Ghana to the work of the United Nations. The Secretary-General said that he attached special importance to the work of non-governmental organizations as the United Nations would not be able to fulfil its objectives unless it has the support of grassroots organisations and peoples throughout the world.

At 7:45 p.m. the Secretary-General had a meeting with a group of Arab Ambassadors made up of the Ambassadors of Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon and Palestine. They discussed the situation in the Middle East, the implementation of Security Council resolutions regarding Iraq and Libya as well as the peace process regarding former Yugoslavia.
