UNITED NATIONS SPACE PROGRAMME TO HOLD INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING IN TRIESTE, ITALY, ON DEVELOPMENTS IN SPACE-BASED OPTICS

19951115

VIENNA, 15 November (UN Information Service) -- Current and future developments in optical instruments used in space-based remote sensing, telecommunications and astrophysics will be the focus of an international meeting of scientists and researchers to be held in Trieste, Italy, from 20 to 25 November.

The five-day International Conference on Optics in Space Science and Technology is jointly organized by the Vienna-based United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics. Hosted by the Centre, the meeting will bring together 50 scientists and researchers from developing and industrialized countries to share the latest developments in the use of optics in space science and technology. Matters related to space science education and the promotion of international cooperation among scientists working in this field are also on the agenda.

The Outer Space Affairs Office, in cooperation with various space agencies and research institutes, has been organizing workshops, training courses and other events aimed at making the benefits of space science and technology available to all countries. In doing so, the United Nations focuses on making experts in the fields of space science and development planning aware of the latest achievements and everyday benefits of space science and helps them identify ways to integrate those technologies into their countries' socioeconomic development programmes.
