INCLUSION OF SUB-ITEMS ON FOOD AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, APPOINTMENT OF JIU MEMBER IN ASSEMBLY AGENDA RECOMMENDED BY GENERAL COMMITTEE
19951109 The General Committee this morning recommended that the General Assembly include in its current agenda sub-items on food and sustainable agricultural development and on the appointment of a member of the Joint Inspection Unit (JIU).The Committee further recommended that the sub-item on food and sustainable agricultural development be allocated to the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) under the item on sustainable development and international economic cooperation. It recommended that the Assembly consider the sub-item on the JIU under the item on appointments to fill vacancies in subsidiary organs and other appointments, and that it be considered in a plenary meeting.
Introducing the sub-item on food and sustainable development, the representative of the Philippines, on behalf of the "Group of 77" developing countries, noted the decision of the recent Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) conference to convene a World Food Summit on 13 to 17 November next year. Consideration of the sub-item would enable the Assembly to express support for the conference, she said.
The representative of Algeria spoke in support of the sub-item, stressing the urgency of the World Food Summit in light of an emerging threat to the world's food security.
The request for inclusion of the sub-item on food and sustainable development was presented in a letter from the Philippines dated 20 October (document A/50/234). An explanatory memorandum annexed to the letter noted the date of the World Food Summit and suggested that the matter be considered as soon as possible.
The request for including the sub-item on the appointment of a member of the JIU contained in a note by the Secretary-General which stated that Ali Badara Tall (Burkina Faso), had resigned from his five-year term of office which had been due to expire on 31 December 2000 (document A.50/235). The Secretary-General suggested that the additional sub-item, 17g, be considered directly in a plenary meeting.
The General Committee's recommendations will be considered by the General Assembly on Friday, 10 November.
