On 25 August, the Olof Palme Memorial Fund, Sweden, and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) will launch the 2011 Negotiation Training Series “Towards a level playing field”, aimed at enhancing diplomats’ negotiation skills. With the generous support of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, this Series demonstrates the fifth year of collaboration between the Olof Palme Memorial Fund and UNITAR.

The New York Office of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research and the United Nations Democracy Fund are pleased to announce the launch of a panel on “Democracy and Development”, on 1 September, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at United Nations Headquarters in New York. This panel, intended for members of Permanent Missions to the United Nations in New York, will explore the links between democracy and development and ask whether democracy is a necessary element for economic development.

The Government of Malaysia is the first to contribute to the newly established Fellowship Fund created by the United Nations main training vehicle, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). A symbolic and timely gesture, in support of South-South cooperation, this contribution will ensure access of diplomats from least developed and developing countries to core diplomatic training courses.

The new negotiation training workshop for delegates at United Nations Headquarters will take place in New York on 14‑15 September as the Olof Palme Memorial Fund and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) join forces once more to strengthen the skills of developing-country diplomats in the field of multilateral negotiations.
