On 7 April 2017, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1591 (2005) concerning the Sudan held informal consultations to consider a quarterly update and a work plan presented by its Panel of Experts.

Against the backdrop of significant security progress and improved cooperation with the Government of Sudan, the United Nations and the African Union should consider amending the mandate of their joint peacekeeping Operation in Darfur, stressed the head of that mission today as he briefed the Security Council on recent developments.

Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O’Brien told the Brussels Conference on Syria today that humanitarian workers cannot stop indiscriminate attacks, sieges and forced displacements, but will continue to provide a lifeline to millions in need, including through regular programmes, cross-line, cross-border and air operations.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki announced today the appointment of Jeremiah Nyamane Kingsley Mamabolo of South Africa as Joint Special Representative and Head of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID).

This week marks two years since the escalation of the conflict in Yemen, United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O’Brien said last night.  Yemen is now on the brink of famine, with nearly 19 million people — more than two thirds of the population — in need humanitarian aid.

On 6 March 2017, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1591 (2005) concerning the Sudan updated its Implementation Assistance Notice No. 1 on the travel ban measure, with the addition of the following paragraph under the section entitled “Reporting of non-compliance with the travel ban”:

The Security Council today extended the mandate of the Panel of Experts charged with monitoring sanctions in Darfur until 12 March 2018, underscoring the need for it to have full access to the region and insisting that the Government of Sudan remove all restrictions imposed on its work.

A report published today by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the United Nations Human Rights Office details grave human rights abuses as well as serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in Juba during and after the fighting that occurred between 8 and 12 July 2016.

On 13 January 2017, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1591 (2005) concerning the Sudan issued the following Implementation Assistance Notice.
