From 28 April to 3 May, the twenty-eighth Session of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names will be held at United Nations Headquarters with the participation of some 140 experts from all corners of the world.

As part of its global outreach in support of the development and use of geospatial information to promote sustainable development, the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management will hold a special joint session with the Cambridge Conference from 24 to 26 July. The Ordnance Survey will host a special one-day senior executive knowledge-exchange and information-sharing session on geospatial data collection and management on 27 July.

At the second session of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UNCE-GGIM), held at United Nations Headquarters from 13 to 15 August, more than 200 delegates met to discuss future trends in geospatial information management and management strategies.

At the Tenth Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names, held at United Nations Headquarters from 31 July-10 August, more than 150 delegates met to discuss standardization of geographical names and to promote their consistent and accurate use.

NEW YORK, 31 July (United Nations Statistics Division) — Worldwide geographical names standards designed to promote the consistent and accurate use of names are important in meeting the everyday needs of international, national and regional communication, whether it be in the service of commerce, transport and administration or international relations, search and rescue and the provision of humanitarian aid.

The United Nations today released "The World's Women 2010: Trends and Statistics", a one-of-a-kind compilation of the latest data documenting progress for women worldwide in eight key areas: population and families, health, education, work, power and decision-making, violence against women, environment and poverty.
