The Secretary-General would like to congratulate warmly the Transitional Government of Burundi and the Burundian people for the successful conduct of the referendum on the post-transitional constitution, which took place yesterday, 28 February 2005.

Following is a statement attributable to the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


The Secretary-General strongly condemns the murder of nine United Nations peacekeepers from Bangladesh today during an ambush by unidentified militia groups near Kafé in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) who were part of a company protecting a camp for internally displaced people.
