SECURITY COUNCIL EXTENDS SIERRA LEONE MISSION UNTIL 31 MARCH 2004,

UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTING RESOLUTION 1508 (2003)


The Security Council this morning extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL), which was to expire on 30 September, until 31 March 2004, welcoming the increasingly stable security situation there.

SECURITY COUNCIL FAILS TO ADOPT TEXT ON PALESTINIAN LEADER’S

DEPORTATION, AS UNITED STATES CASTS NEGATIVE VOTE


The Security Council this afternoon failed to adopt a draft resolution by which it would have demanded that Israel desist from any act of deportation and cease any threat to the safety of the elected President of the Palestinian Authority.

Members of the Security Council have been following with concern the events that took place in Guinea-Bissau on 14 September.  They condemned the assumption of power through non-constitutional means, especially by threat or the use of force.

Security Council members met this afternoon at the request of the Non-Aligned Movement caucus and Arab Group to discuss the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, and in particular the Israeli decision in principle to expel Chairman Arafat.
