The Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 751 (1992) concerning Somalia adopted, on 11 May 2009, consolidated, revised guidelines for the conduct of its work.

The international community had a “unique opportunity” to help the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia establish peace and security, speakers emphasized today as the Security Council heard a series of briefings on the situation in that country by senior United Nations officials.

On 12 May 2009, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1521 (2003) concerning Liberia approved the inclusion of additional information concerning two individuals: Victoria Refell (travel ban list only) and Edwin Snowe, Jr. (travel ban and assets freeze lists).

The ministerial meeting of the Security Council on the Middle East that took place today was critical in reaffirming a common position on the peace process after the Gaza crisis and Israeli elections, Sergey Lavrov, Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, said today at a Headquarters press conference.

During its May presidency, the Russian Federation would continue to pursue the policy of consolidating the Security Council’s prerogatives under the United Nations Charter and its main responsibility to maintain international peace and security, Vitaly Churkin, the country’s Permanent Representative, said today.
