The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President María Cristina Perceval (Argentina):

The international community must mobilize to overcome the “highly volatile” security situation and degenerating humanitarian crisis in the Central African Republic, including by supporting the newly deployed African Union mission, the top United Nations official in that country told the Security Council today.

The Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 751 (1992) and 1907 (2009) concerning Somalia and Eritrea is deeply concerned by the continuing trade in Somali charcoal as reported by the Monitoring Group on Somalia and Eritrea (document S/2013/413).

The Security Council today encouraged the continuing involvement of regional and subregional organizations in the peaceful settlement of disputes, including through conflict prevention, confidence building and mediation, and underlined the importance of utilizing their existing and potential capabilities.

On 5 August 2013, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999) and 1989 (2011) approved the amendments specified with underline and strikethrough in the entries below on its Al-Qaida Sanctions List of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo set out in paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 2083 (2012) adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.

The Security Council’s work for August would include two open debates, respectively, on the cooperation between the United Nations and regional and subregional organizations, and on the protection of civilians in armed conflict, Permanent Representative of Argentina, María Cristina Perceval, said today at Headquarters as she assumed the 15-nation body’s presidency.

On 29 July 2013, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1970 (2011) concerning Libya updated the entry specified below to its List of Individuals and Entities subject to the travel ban and asset freeze.

The Security Council today extended the mandate of the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire by 11 months, until 30 June 2014, deciding to reconfigure its uniformed personnel by that time and consider possible further reductions based on the evolution of security conditions on the ground.

Expressing support for the long-standing United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, the Security Council this morning decided to extend the mission, established in 1964, for another six months until 31 January 2014.
