In accordance with the principle of alphabetical rotation, the following new Chairmen of United Nations security bodies will take office on 1 November:

SECURITY COUNCIL

Salim Mohammed Al'Khussaiby (Oman) will succeed Ibrahim A. Gambari (Nigeria) as President of the Security Council.

MILITARY STAFF COMMITTEE

Major-General Zhou Jiang (China) will succeed Lieutenant-General Wesley Kanne Clark (United States) as Chairman of the Military Staff Committee.

UNRWA'S ROLE VITAL TO MIDDLE EAST PEACE, STATE SPEAKERS IN FOURTH COMMITTEE

The role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) was vital if peace was to take root in the Middle East, several delegates told the Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) this afternoon, as it concluded its consideration of the Agency's work.

FIFTH COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS $21.7 MILLION FOR MISSION IN HAITI

The General Assembly would authorize and assess $21.7 million gross ($21.4 million net) for the United Nations Mission in Haiti (UNMIH) for the period 1 to 30 November, if it adopts a draft decision approved this morning by the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary). The Committee also began considering how to improve the Organization's financial situation.
