SECRETARY-GENERAL ARRIVES IN SOUTH AFRICA FOR OPENING OF UNCTAD IX

19960425 MIDRAND, South Africa, 25 April -- Secretary-General Boutros Boutros- Ghali arrived today at 3 p.m. at Johannesburg International Airport on his second official visit to South Africa.

On Saturday, 27 April, he will open the ninth United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD IX).

SECURITY COUNCIL CALLS ON BURUNDIANS TO RENOUNCE VIOLENCE, ENGAGE IN COMPREHENSIVE DIALOGUE

Deeply concerned at the widespread purchase and use of weapons by Burundians and at reported statements calling for the arming of civilians, the Security Council this afternoon called on all Burundians to renounce the use of violence and engage in a comprehensive dialogue to ensure a peaceful future.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY CONDEMNS ISRAEL'S ATTACKS ON CIVILIANS IN LEBANON, CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE WITHDRAWAL OF ISRAELI FORCES FROM THAT COUNTRY

The General Assembly this afternoon condemned Israel's attacks on Lebanon's civilian population and called upon it to cease immediately its actions against and withdraw its forces from all Lebanese territory, in accordance with Security Council resolution 425 (1978).
