SECURITY COUNCIL EXTENDS MANDATE OF UNMOP UNTIL 15 JULY

Urging Croatia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to implement fully their 1996 Agreement on Normalization of Relations, the Security Council this morning authorized the United Nations military observers to continue monitoring the demilitarization of the Prevlaka peninsula until 15 July.

The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women opened its sixteenth session this morning by electing Salma Kahn, of Bangladesh, as its new Chairperson and adopting its agenda and organization of work. Ms. Kahn succeeds Ivanka Corti, of Italy.

SECRETARY-GENERAL, SHOCKED TO LEARN OF MASSACRE IN BURUNDI, STRONGLY URGES PARTIES TO NEGOTIATE

19970113 The following statement was issued today by the Acting Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General was shocked to learn of another massacre by the Burundi Army, on 10 January, of 122 Burundi refugees returning from the United Republic of Tanzania, in the province of Muyinga.
