SECURITY COUNCIL RECOMMENDS TO GENERAL ASSEMBLY THAT REPUBLIC OF KIRIBATI BE ADMITTED TO MEMBERSHIP OF UNITED NATIONS

The Security Council this afternoon recommended to the General Assembly that the Republic of Kiribati be admitted to membership of the United Nations. That admission would bring to 186 the Organization's total membership.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Brigadier Rezaqul Haider of Bangladesh as Chief Military Liaison Officer of the United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNAMET). Brigadier Haider will assume the post shortly.
