2000 SESSION OF NGO COMMITTEE CONTINUES

Beginning the fourth day of the second part of its 2000 session, scheduled for 12 to 23 June, the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) this morning continued reviewing applications for consultative status within the Economic and Social Council.

The current requests for consultative status were deferred from previous sessions of the Committee in 1998 and 1999.

SECURITY COUNCIL MEETS ON SITUATION IN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO

Continuing hostilities in the Equateur and Kasai provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, uninterrupted violence in Kivu and heavy fighting between foreign armies in the city of Kisangani were among the key elements of the Congolese crisis, the President of the Security Council said this afternoon.

The representative of Austria introduced her country’s third, fourth and fifth periodic reports on compliance with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women this morning, highlighting the advances made on improving the quality of life for women in that country.
