The first World Humanitarian Day will be observed on Wednesday, 19 August, at United Nations Headquarters with a wreath-laying ceremony remembering the victims of the 2003 attack on the United Nations in Baghdad, followed by the opening of an exhibition of posters and photographs capturing the images of humanitarian workers in action.

During its sixty-third session, the General Assembly declared 19 August each year as World Humanitarian Day, to increase public awareness about humanitarian assistance activities worldwide and to honour all United Nations and other humanitarian workers, including those who have lost their lives in the cause of duty.

On 10 August 2009, the Security Council Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee approved the amendments specified with strikethrough and underline in the 15 entries below to its Consolidated List of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo set out in paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 1822 (2008) adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.
