On Monday, 19 July, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon left Geneva to travel to Afghanistan, to co-chair the International Conference on Afghanistan with President Hamid Karzai, which would take place the following day. As the Secretary-General noted, the Tuesday meeting was the first international conference on Afghanistan to be held in the country, organized by the Afghan Government for the Afghan people.

LISBON, 23 July — The eighteenth International Media Seminar on Peace in the Middle East concluded this morning with two panel discussions, the first on “Harnessing new media for positive change in the Middle East”, and the second on “The Civil Society Initiative: The role of Israeli and Palestinian mayors in contributing to peace and security in the Middle East”.

The eighteenth International Media Seminar on Peace in the Middle East continued this afternoon, holding two panel discussions on the topics “New media vs. traditional media: allies or adversaries in furthering the peace process” and “The role of Israeli and Palestinian women in achieving peace and security in the Middle East”.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Madrid, Spain, on Friday, 16 July, in the morning, to attend the first meeting of the Millennium Development Goals Advocacy Group, which he had recently launched.

The Secretary-General arrived in Geneva on Sunday, 18 July. That afternoon, he visited the League of Nations Museum, at the Palais des Nations. The following day, he held a breakfast meeting with the heads of the United Nations organizations based in Geneva.
