The International Year of Microcredit 2005 was an effort to bring sustained public attention to one of development’s great success stories, namely the extraordinary spread of microfinance, Mark Malloch Brown, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator, told correspondents at a Headquarters press briefing this afternoon.

The fight against infectious disease had always been a moral imperative, but in the present era it was now a security imperative, correspondents were told at a Headquarters Press Conference today upon the launch of an expanded Global Public Health Intelligence Network (GPHIN).  The Network monitors media sources and health and science web sites for early word about disease outbreaks, contaminated food and water, bioterrorism, chemical or radiological exposure, and natural disasters.

The International Year of Microcredit 2005 will be officially launched on Thursday, 18 November, at Headquarters, Henriette Keijzers, Deputy Executive Secretary and Officer-In-Charge of the United Nations Capital Development Fund, announced at a press briefing this morning.  The General Assembly designated the Year by its resolution 53/197 of 15 December 1998.
