The UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) has strongly condemned an attack which took place against a UN convoy yesterday evening in Abyei. At the time of the attack, the convoy was transporting 200 troops of the Joint Integrated Units of the Sudan Armed Forces to their designated post, as part of the deployment plan of the Kadugli Agreements.
The Secretary-General is taking part in an event on road safety with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg today. He is to say that many of the 1.3 million deaths in traffic crashes every year are avoidable. The Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety provides a road map, and our goal is to save 5 million lives between now and the year 2020.
The Security Council received a briefing today on the latest developments in Somalia from the Secretary-General’s Special Representative, Augustine Mahiga. He said there is an urgent need to develop a consensus on when and how to hold elections while seeking to defuse the stalemate between the legislative and executive branches of Government.
The Special Adviser to the Secretary-General for Myanmar, Vijay Nambiar, is scheduled to arrive on Wednesday in Myanmar for a three-day visit at the invitation of the Government. He will hold meetings in Naypyitaw and Yangon with the newly installed Government, political parties, civil society organizations and other key interlocutors.
