It would be wrong to discuss the sovereignty claim “over the heads” and expressed wishes of the people of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) following their overwhelming referendum vote to remain a part of the United Kingdom, the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations said at a Headquarters press conference today.

An infusion of youth perspectives — drawn from such events as today’s Economic and Social Council Youth Forum on science and technology and a newly launched online campaign known as “Innovate Your Future” — would bring a “real renewal” to the work of the United Nations, said Council President Néstor Osorio of Colombia at a Headquarters press conference this afternoon.

The Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda concluded its meeting in Bali, in Indonesia, earlier today. Discussions during the three-day meeting focused on how to build a global partnership and means of implementation for the post-2015 sustainable development agenda.

This morning the High Representative for Disarmament, Angela Kane, handed over a letter from her to the Deputy Prime Minister of Syria containing the modalities for cooperation, reflecting the standard provisions that would be required to ensure the proper, safe and efficient conduct of the technical mission looking into alleged use of chemical weapons.

The Russian Federation’s March presidency of the Security Council had seen the 15-member organ take up a “very rich” programme of work, Permanent Representative Vitaly I. Churkin said today, highlighting the adoption of six resolutions, the issuance of eight press statements and discussions on diverse security situations around the world, from Mali and South Sudan to the Middle East and Kosovo.

The ongoing response to a natural disaster by local authorities, as well as the central Government in the Philippines provided “a model of best practice” for partnership with the international community, a senior United Nations humanitarian official said at a Headquarters press conference today, following visits to Myanmar and the Philippines.

The Secretary-General is in San Marino, where he is taking part today in the investiture of the country’s two Heads of State. In a speech, said that San Marino offered three universal lessons about democracy: that no one system is right for all countries; that democracy can always be improved; and that democracy allows individuals to engage with authorities to reach collective goals.

Maintaining peace and security, preventing conflict and ending sexual violence against women in Africa would be among the Security Council’s top priorities in April, the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations said at Headquarters today.
