SECURITY COUNCIL SETS 28 FEBRUARY 1996 DATE TO ELECT NEW INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE MEMBER

The Security Council this afternoon decided that the election to fill the vacancy on the International Court of Justice will be held on 28 February 1996.

By adopting without a vote resolution 1018 (1995), in accordance with Article 14 of the Statute of the Court, the Security Council set the date for its simultaneous meeting with the General Assembly to elect the new member of the Court, who will serve out the remainder of the nine-year term of Judge Andres Aguilar Mawdsley (Venezuela), until 5 February 2000. Judge Mawdsley died on 24 October.

The General Assembly would decide to restrict the length of documents produced by the Secretariat for its discussion or for its subsidiary bodies to 16 pages, under a draft resolution on reduction of paperwork introduced by the United States in the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) this afternoon.
