Toxic chemicals moving freely across the globe and causing sustained damage to all forms of life would be the subject of international negotiations next week, correspondents were told by representatives of industry, government and non-governmental organizations Tuesday morning, at a press conference sponsored by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The current crisis in Haiti was a direct result of the disputed elections of April 1997, Chetan Kumar, Senior Associate of the International Peace Academy (IPA) told correspondents at a Headquarters' press conference this morning on recent developments in Haiti. He was joined by the new President of the Academy, David Malone, who succeeded Olara Otunnu in November 1998.

Fred Eckhard, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, began today's noon briefing by reminding correspondents that the beginning of the year brought to Headquarters various executive boards of funds and programmes that were based in New York. The Spokesman's Office had been asking if there was anyone in town attending those meetings who might be of interest to correspondents.
