Fred Eckhard, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, began today's noon briefing by saying the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Nitin Desai, had been invited to room S-226 to brief correspondents on the high-level meeting on globalization that would take place in the General Assembly tomorrow.

Some 300,000 people had been displaced by the fighting in Kosovo, more than 60 per cent of whom were children, Olara Otunnu, Special Representative for the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, said this morning as he recommended a three-pronged approach to deal with the "unfolding tragedy".

Fred Eckhard, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, began today's noon briefing by reporting that the United Nations humanitarian needs assessment mission to Bamyan in Afghanistan, which had been announced earlier in the week, was still on hold pending clarification of security and the state of the airport in Bamyan. Alternate routes into Bamyan were being explored.
