A number of countries have expressed support for Japan's candidature in forthcoming elections to the Security Council as well as its bid to become a permanent member of the Council, Japanese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hidehiko Hamada said at a Headquarters press conference yesterday.

Sylvana Foa, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, began today's briefing by announcing that Marrack Goulding, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, would brief correspondents on the situation in Afghanistan which, she added, was "rather timely from what we see happening militarily there today".

The United Nations must adapt itself to the changing times and should equip itself with the means to meet the challenges that lay ahead in the next millennium, Tansu Ciller, Foreign Minister of Turkey, said at a Headquarters press conference this morning.
