Speakers Call for ‘Prevention Revolution’, Mainstreaming of Anti-AIDS Programmes into National Health Systems as General Assembly’s High-level Meeting Continues

Calling for a “prevention revolution” on the second day of the General Assembly’s High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS, ministers and other high-ranking Government officials stressed that programmes to combat the disease must be mainstreamed into national health systems during the next phase of the global response to the pandemic, while emphasizing that those directly affected must be included in the search for solutions.

Security Council Extends Until 12 June 2012 Mandate of Panel of Experts Helping Monitor Sanctions on Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

The Security Council this morning extended the mandate of the Panel of Experts helping monitor sanctions on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea for an additional year, until 12 June 2012. Acting under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, the Council unanimously adopted resolution 1985 (2011) maintaining the current mandate of the group that it established in June 2009.

Secretary-General Appoints Arnauld Antoine Akodjènou of Benin Deputy Special Representative for Côte d’Ivoire

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Arnauld Antoine Akodjènou of Benin as his Deputy Special Representative for Côte d’Ivoire. He will replace Abou Moussa of Chad, who has been appointed Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA), based in Libreville, Gabon.

Security Council Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee Approves Deletion of Two Entries from Consolidated List, Amendments to Nine Entries

On 9 June 2011, the Security Council Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee approved the deletion (de-listing) of the two entries specified below from its Consolidated List. The Committee approved these de-listings following its review of the names, as called for in paragraph 26 of resolution 1904 (2009).

States Parties to Convention on Law of the Sea Will Hold Twenty-First Meeting at Headquarters 13-17 June

The twenty-first Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea will be held at Headquarters from 13 to 17 June. Often referred to as “the constitution of the oceans”, the landmark Convention was adopted on 10 December 1982 and entered into force on 16 November 1994. Its 320 articles and nine annexes govern all aspects of ocean space and maritime issues.

Francoise Barré-Sinoussi, 2008 Nobel Laureate in Medicine for helping to discover the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), led strong calls at the United Nations today for integrating the global response to AIDS into broader health agendas, and for taking advantage of every opportunity to reach those living with HIV or at risk of infection whenever and wherever they interacted with local health-care delivery systems.
