Security Council Extends Mandate of African Union Mission in Somalia, Requests Increase in Troop Strength

The Security Council today extended the mandate of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to 31 October 2014, requesting the African Union to increase the troop strength of that regional peacekeeping body from 17,731 to a maximum of 22,126 uniformed personnel as part of overall efforts to combat the increasingly asymmetrical tactics of Al-Shabaab rebels in the country.

Israel supported the humanitarian work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) by approving the vast majority of its requests and providing it unrestricted access to Israeli officials, its representative told the Fourth Committee today, adding, however, that the country “deeply opposes UNRWA’s political agenda”.

Reaffirming its intention to keep implementation of the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the situation there under close review and its readiness to consider the imposition of measures if any party failed significantly to meet its obligations, the Security Council today extended the European Union multinational stabilization force (EUFOR ALTHEA) for another 12 months.
