The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific is finalizing preparations to resume operations from its headquarters in Kathmandu, following a temporary relocation after the devastating earthquakes that hit Nepal in 2015.
The Security Council today welcomed the signing of the National Strategy on Disarmament, Demobilization, Reintegration and Repatriation, the National Security Policy, the Internal Security Forces Development Plan and the National Reconciliation Strategy by the Central African Republic.
Delegates at today's Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) meeting discussed a proposed cost-neutral restructuring of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), aimed at shifting more of the Office’s work from its headquarters in Geneva to existing and proposed regional offices.
Marking International Day of Tolerance, the Secretary-General said that the values of tolerance and mutual understanding are facing profound tests. He noted that refugees and migrants continue to face closed doors and clenched fists, while bigotry shows its face through racism, anti-Muslim hatred, anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination.
