Debate Focuses on Work Programme for 2017, Special Political Missions as Fifth Committee Resumes Seventy-first Session

The Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) opened the first part of its resumed seventy-first session today with a review of its 2017 provisional work programme, the 2016-2017 programme budget for special political missions concerning Syria and the status of implementing the Organization’s information and communications technology (ICT) strategy, among other matters.

On 6 March 2017, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1591 (2005) concerning the Sudan updated its Implementation Assistance Notice No. 1 on the travel ban measure, with the addition of the following paragraph under the section entitled “Reporting of non-compliance with the travel ban”:

NEW YORK, 6 March — (Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea) — Maria Emilynda Jeddahlyn Pia Benosa of the Philippines has been awarded the 2017 Hamilton Shirley Amerasinghe Fellowship on the Law of the Sea.  Viviana Gutierrez Delgado was selected as an alternate in case Ms. Benosa is unable to accept the Fellowship.

Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O’Brien travelled to Somalia today to assess the impact of the drought which has left the country on the brink of famine.  He met with humanitarian partners to discuss ways to scale up the response to save lives, and called on all parties to step up efforts to facilitate increased humanitarian access.

The closing ceremony for the exhibition Rape in Conflict will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, 6 March, in the Visitors’ Lobby at United Nations Headquarters in New York.  It is organized by the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict.
