A humanitarian emergency in Burkina Faso is worsening as recurrent armed attacks and insecurity continue to force people to flee their homes.  Nearly 220,000 people are now displaced - 50,000 more than in May - and rains are impeding access to basic services.

On 10 July 2019, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 2374 (2017) concerning Mali approved the addition of the entries specified below to its Sanctions List of individuals subject to the travel ban as set out in paragraphs 1 to 3 of Security Council resolution 2374 (2017) and renewed by paragraph 1 of resolution 2432 (2018) and adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.

The members of the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 2374 (2017) concerning Mali (the Committee) recalled the provisions of the Agreement on Peace and Reconciliation in Mali (the Agreement) calling upon the Security Council to give its full support to the Agreement, to closely monitor its implementation, and if necessary, to take measures against anyone hindering the implementation of the commitments contained therein or the realization of its objectives.

On 24 June 2019, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 2374 (2017) concerning Mali held informal consultations to hear a briefing by the Coordinator of the Panel of Experts on Mali on the statements of case shared with members of the Committee.

The Security Council today renewed the mandate of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) for one year, requesting the Mission to respond to the deteriorating security situation in the country’s central region as a second strategic priority.

On 12 April 2019, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 2374 (2017) concerning Mali was briefed by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Pramila Patten.

The International Organization for Migration says intercommunal violence and floods in the Mopti region of Mali are aggravating a fragile humanitarian situation for 50,000 internally displaced people while 210,000 others are food insecure and only 2 per cent of communities can access safe drinking water.

More than 1.3 million people in north-west and south-west Cameroon need humanitarian assistance, up from 160,000 in 2018.  Non-State armed groups banned education, 80 per cent of schools are closed and 74 schools were destroyed.  The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says half of those in need are children.

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, highlighting a “survivor-centred approach”.  The Secretary-General’s message stressed that survivors are mostly women and girls, but also men and boys, calling for support to access life-saving health services, justice and reparation.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on a strategic partnership, which outlines areas of cooperation to deepen engagement and accelerate implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
