The High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration launched their regional refugee and migrant response plan for Venezuela, the first of its kind in the Americas.  The plan will respond to the needs of Venezuelans on the move, and for next year require $378 million.

With Yazidi activist and gender-based violence survivor Nadia Murad having officially received the Nobel Peace Prize today, UNICEF is shining a spotlight on the plight of hundreds of thousands of uprooted children in Iraq whose lives are threatened by freezing temperatures and floods across much of the country.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said today it had evacuated 133 refugees from Libya to Niger, most of them women and children who were previously detained in Libya.

On 4 December 2018, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1970 (2011) concerning Libya adopted an Implementation Assistance Notice entitled “Guidance to Member States on the correct application of the provisions of the resolutions regarding the payment of management fees on frozen assets.”

Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, telling students at Tsinghua University in China that the Paris Agreement on climate change was a great start for countries to commit to lowering emissions, said she was counting on young people to hold leaders accountable to ensure a secure future for themselves and future generations.

On 16 November 2018, the Committee approved the addition of the entry specified below to the List of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze and travel ban set out in paragraphs 15 and 17 of Security Council resolution 1970 (2011) and paragraph 19 of resolution 1973 (2011), adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.

The High Commissioner for Refugees is extremely concerned about the impacts of intensified conflict in Yemen’s Hodeidah Governorate on civilians and aid operations. In October alone, 94 civilians were killed and 95 injured.  The World Food Programme is dramatically scaling up to meet growing need throughout the country.

Voting to extend, until 15 February 2020, the mandate of the Panel of Experts who oversee the sanctions targeting the illicit export of oil from Libya, the Security Council decided that perpetrators of gender-based violence may also be subject to the measures.

Outlining her continued activities to fight impunity for grave crimes committed since 2011 in Libya, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court today asked the Security Council to back up its support with effective action, particularly regarding the arrest of outstanding fugitives from justice.

The Security Council today decided to renew, for a period of one year, its prior authorization allowing Member States to inspect vessels on the high seas off the coast of Libya, given reasonable grounds for suspicion that they are being used for smuggling migrants or human trafficking.
