The United Nations Refugee Agency today welcomed recent actions taken by several European countries to collectively end a stand-off on the Mediterranean, where some 450 refugees and migrants had been stranded at sea amid a battle over disembarkation.  France, Germany, Italy, Malta, Spain and Portugal have agreed to land the ships and share the processing of these people.

UNAIDS issued a stark wake‑up call today, saying time to reach the 2020 targets for HIV is running out.  New HIV infections are rising in some 50 countries, while AIDS-related deaths are not falling fast enough.  A new report has found that gains made for children are not being sustained, and new infections among them have declined only 8 per cent in the past two years.

Heavy rains marking the start of the monsoon season in Bangladesh have impacted nearly 2,500 families in the Rohingya refugee settlements in the Cox’s Bazar district, according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, which is continuing aid distribution and prepositioning more supplies.

On 7 June 2018, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1518 (2003) approved the removal of the following entity from its List of Individuals and Entities subject to the assets freeze set out by paragraphs 19 and 23 of Security Council resolution 1483 (2003) adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today announced the appointment of Karim Asad Ahmad Khan of the United Kingdom as the Special Adviser and Head of the Investigative Team established pursuant to Security Council resolution 2379 (2017), to support domestic efforts to hold Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL/Da’esh) accountable by collecting, preserving, and storing evidence in Iraq of acts that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed by the terrorist group.

On the heels of largely successful democratic elections — viewed by many around the world as a historic turning point — Iraq still faced such challenges as continued terrorist threats and sectarian divisions, which must remain a priority on the international agenda, stressed the senior United Nations official in the country as he briefed the Security Council today.
