EMERGENCY RELIEF COORDINATOR CONDEMNS KILLING OF AID WORKERS IN SRI LANKA


NEW YORK, 7 August (OCHA) -- Jan Egeland, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, today deplored the recent killing of 17 Sri Lankan aid workers in the north-eastern town of Muttur, Sri Lanka.

UNITED NATIONS ASSISTANCE FOR TAJIKISTAN EARTHQUAKE


NEW YORK, 1 August (OCHA) -- Two earthquakes of magnitudes 5.3 and 5.4 shook the Central Asian country of Tajikistan on Saturday morning and afternoon, respectively, affecting parts of two southern districts -- Kumsangir and Panj -- close to the border with Afghanistan.

AT MIDYEAR, UNITED NATIONS STILL NEEDS $3.1 BILLION FOR HUMANITARIAN ACTION


NEW YORK/GENEVA, 18 July (OCHA) -- Six months after the launch of the Humanitarian Appeal 2006, the United Nations and its partners still require $3.1 billion to address the urgent needs of 30 million people struck by crisis in 31 countries worldwide.
