The World Meteorological Organization said today the Earth is set to experience its five warmest years on record from 2015-2019. Increasing greenhouse gas concentrations will fuel the global heat – and accompanying ice melt, glacier retreat, sea level rise, ocean heat and extreme weather for generations to come.

In view of Mr. Gressly’s assumption of the Emergency Ebola Response Coordinator functions, the Secretary-General also announced today the appointment of François Grignon of France as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Protection and Operations ad interim in the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today announced the appointment of David McLachlan-Karr of Australia as his Deputy Special Representative ad interim in the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), where he will also serve as United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator.

The Security Council today decided to renew its sanctions regime imposed against designated individuals and entities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as it unanimously adopted resolution 2478 (2019).

The International Organization for Migration says intercommunal violence and floods in the Mopti region of Mali are aggravating a fragile humanitarian situation for 50,000 internally displaced people while 210,000 others are food insecure and only 2 per cent of communities can access safe drinking water.

Today is the Day of the Seafarer.  This year’s theme, “I Am on Board with Gender Equality”, focuses on the importance and value of women within the professional ranks of the maritime world.  The theme is also in line with this year’s theme for World Maritime Day:  “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community”.

On 7 June 2019, the Group of Experts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo transmitted its final report to the President of the Security Council (S/2019/469). Today is the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, and the 2019 theme is “Let’s Grow the Future Together”.  In his message, the Secretary-General stressed that protecting and restoring land can reduce forced migration, improve food security, spur economic growth and help address the global climate emergency.

On 24 May 2019, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1533 (2004) concerning the Democratic Republic of the Congo received a briefing by the Group of Experts in connection with the Group’s final report submitted in pursuance of resolution 2424 (2018).

The World Food Programme says it reached 10.6 million people with emergency food assistance across Yemen in March – more than in any other month.  An estimated 10 million people in the country are one step away from famine, and the United Nations and partners are doing everything to help them and roll back the risk.
