SPECIAL DECOLONIZATION COMMITTEE HEARS PETITIONERS ON PUERTO RICO

The bombing practice activities of the United States Navy on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques and the issue of the Territory's political status were the main themes during this morning's meeting of the Special Committee on Decolonization as it heard petitioners on the question of Puerto Rico.

The General Assembly would reiterate that the only way to put an end to the special and particular colonial situation on the question of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) was a peaceful and negotiated settlement of the sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom, by the terms of a draft resolution approved without a vote this morning by the Special Committee on decolonization.

SPECIAL COMMITTEE TAKES UP QUESTION OF GUAM

The deleterious effects of colonial activity on the Chamorro people of Guam included the degradation of traditions and the overburdening of educational and health systems, through imposed immigration policies, the Vice-Chairman of the Guam Commission on Decolonization told the Special Committee on decolonization this afternoon.
