On Saturday evening, 28 January, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki‑moon, accompanied by Madam Ban Soon-taek, arrived in Addis Ababa from Zurich to attend the eighteenth ordinary session of the Assembly of the African Union.

In late January-early February, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Madam Ban Soon-taek travelled to Switzerland, Ethiopia, Jordan, Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory. They arrived in Davos, Switzerland, from New York on Thursday morning, 26 January, where the Secretary-General met with a number of private-sector personalities at the World Economic Forum.

The main aim was to attend the World Future Energy Summit and to launch the Year of Sustainable Energy. He also held a range of bilateral meetings and addressed the closing session of the Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency.

The next morning, the Secretary-General left for Mogadishu on an unannounced visit to the Somali capital.

There, he also met with German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle. The Secretary-General thanked the German Government for holding the Conference on Afghanistan, which provided a vital opportunity to refocus attention on the civilian aspects of transition in Afghanistan, essential to ensuring a sustainable transformation.

The main aim of the visit was to attend the fourth High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness, co-hosted by the Government of the Republic of Korea and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
