SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES RELEASE OF WAR PRISONERS BY FRENTE POLISARIO


The following statement was issued by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan on 1 September:


The Secretary-General welcomes the release by the Frente Polisario of 243 prisoners of war who were repatriated today to the Kingdom of Morocco by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

SECRETARY-GENERAL DEEPLY CONCERNED BY BREAKDOWN OF CEASEFIRE IN NEPAL


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by the breakdown of the ceasefire and the recent upsurge in violence in Nepal.  He remains convinced that there is no alternative to the continuation of dialogue and a peaceful solution to the conflict.
